Invitation for 2026 APPA Regional Forum – Songkla, Thailand

Warm greetings from Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Hat Yai, Thailand! The Faculty of Science, PSU together with the Asian Pacific Phycological Association are pleased to announce the 2026 APPA Regional Forum, to be held on July 6-11, 2026 at the Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand.

2026 APPA Regional Forum

The first launch of long journey of APPA’s Regional Forum was in Rongcheng, Shandong Province, China with the theme of “Kelp Aquacultures: from Current Issues to Future Scientific Development for Applications and Sustainability”. As globally well-known, China has the largest production of aquacultured seaweeds in the world and the Shandong Province coastal areas is the main location with various other marine cultivated organisms. So, this was the right place to co-host a symposium there.

In 2026, we decide to be a co-host together with Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University with the theme of seaweed blue carbon and the related sciences. This Regional Forum aims to foster collaborative seaweed/seagrass/mangrove blue carbon and the role of seaweed/seagrass/mangrove in carbon sequestration from all perspectives and various sectors, including representatives from government agencies, private sectors, and the public. This meeting is our second launch of long journey of APPA’s Regional Forum.

2025 APPA Regional Forum – Shandong, China

2025 APPA Regional Forum was held on 21-23 April in Rongcheng, Shandong Province, China. On behalf of the Asian Pacific Phycological Association and the Organizing Committee, we would like to thank each of participants for their contribution and presentations.

There were 67 registrants from 6 countries with 10 keynote speakers, 7 APPA invitational speakers, 7 general oral session speakers and 22 poster presentations. The meeting also included the field trip to kelp farms and other shellfish farms in Ailian Bay and to visit Haizhibao Company to see the post-harvesting processes of kelp.

This meeting was the first launch of APPA Regional Forum, and the next 2026 APPA Regional Forum will be followed at Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai, Thailand with the theme of Blue Carbon.

Finally, the APPA staff would like to thank once again the sponsor, Haizhibao Company, for invaluable support for making this forum successful.

2025 APPA Regional Forum

APPA has the regular symposium called Asian Pacific Phycological Forum (APPF) in every 3 years. We had 2024 APPF in Sapporo, Japan and the next 2027 APPF scheduled in HoChiMin City, Vietnam. With 30th anniversary of APPA, we are planning a new challenge of co-hosting the satellite or regional symposiums, a specific theme-based, in between these 3 years-intervals. As globally well-known, China has the largest production of aquacultured seaweeds in the world and the Shandong Province coastal areas is the main location with various marine cultivated species. We decided this is the right place for hosting a symposium with the theme of seaweed aquaculture and the related sciences. This meeting is the our first launch of long journey of APPA’s Regional Forum.
